Do you know LOLA? LOLA (for Ladies Of Liberty Alliance) is a new (and-let's face it-quite small) American organization and its mission is to build a community of liberty-minded women who are empowered to achieve their individual goals in the fight for freedom. This is accomplished through education and networking opportunities that are focused on inspiring and supporting all women who want to gain the confidence and support to fulfill their dreams. They have a social network here.

They have come up with a funny idea to publicize their existence and raise funds: a calendar! For exemple, you can see a picture from the calendar here.

I think that we could do the same on this continent for 2010-2011. The idea of a calendar is to represent varying parts of the liberty movement in Europe at large and showcase the strength, beauty, and intelligence of women involved in liberty activism.

Perhaps is it a way to help balance the male to female ratio within the liberty movement. Perhaps not. But I'm sure it could be fun :)

I am currently exchanging emails with Allison Gibbs from LOLA to understand how they have carried through this project. I'll let you know...

Wouldn't a "gorgeous libertarian men" calendar of be a way to attract women to the cause?

Yes, I think we might think about it, too.

You see, in my mind, it is not a beauty contest. Amateur "models" have to look smart, of course, but the goal is to represent varying parts of the liberty movement and a space on the calendar will be dedicated for them to introduce what they stand for, and what they have done for the Liberty movement.

If I want a calendar with women selected for their beauty I'll grab the playboy end-of-year issue. What I'd like to display on my fridge is a calendar with Ayn Rand and Margaret Thatcher

Yes, I don't know if it is a success in the USA. I think there must be a way to promote the movement more efficiently than with this type of calendar. And still have fun.

OK, I have just been in touch with Allison. I sum up below:

She thinks the "calendar" operation is a success.

They have printed 5,000 calendars and 4,500 have been sold.

The cost to produce the calendar (from taking pictures to printing the calendar) was $5,000 total. Therefore $1 for 1 calendar.

They sell it $20 each.

Models are unpaid volunteers (of course).

The design of the calendar was done for free by professionals.

Pictures have been taken by the same photographer at the same place at the same time (models gathered for a libertarian event and the photo shoot took place the same day).

Can other libertarian associations get some from LOLA at a preferential price in order to resell them for their own fund raising purposes? Or would the ladies object?

Don't know. Do you want me to give you her email so you can ask her directly?
