Sustainable E-Commerce Business Models

Finding a sustainable e-commerce business model is the goal of every internet marketer. Due to the fact that e-commerce has gained the majority of the market share in terms of the amount of money being exchanged, there are now more ways than ever to earn a living online. That being said, there are many ways to build income very quickly. Some of these e-commerce business models are sustainable. Others are not.

One type of model that, in the long run, has sustainability that is questionable, is a model that bases income around Pay Per Click (PPC) traffic. Search engines have and continue to tighten the standards with respect to their allowance of inclusion of sites built or designed specifically with the only out-bound page links being either those to other pages on the site or PPC ads.

Some search engines openly discourage these types of sites from being built and have actually put review teams in place as a means to manually review websites so as to be judged for continued inclusion or exclusion from the search engine index.

Obviously, if a site is reviewed by a human reviewer and tagged as a made-for-PPC site, then the site is, in many cases, removed fro the index. In these cases, the site owner would notice an immediate drop in traffic and income.

An e-commerce business model that is much more sustainable would be one that is based around a variety of useful products or services that are either owned by the promoter or that they are an affiliate of. This model only requires one website and the majority of the efforts put forth by the marketer are towards website presentation, functionality and value. Additionally, time will be spent on promotion of the website and its offerings.

Key to the building of a sustainable e-commerce business model is the capturing of targeted leads.

A list of targeted leads gives an internet marketer the ability to market to a targeted audience over and over again. Additionally, it gives the website owner the ability to invite repeat traffic any time fresh content is added as well as offer them new products and services over and over again.

A sustainable business model is based around the adding of value to the internet. A website that adds value to the internet will continuously do several things. It will continuously add up-to-date and fresh content that is relevant to the products and services that it offers but that is also relevant to the state of the industry that it serves or sells to. Additionally, a sustainable business model will link out to other resources as a means to provide visitors with a variety of options that are not available on that site. These outbound links would also be managed to reflect any changes or updates to the landing pages that they point to.

Having a business model with sustainability in mind is one that is based around one website that focuses on fresh content, products and services as opposed to a model that calls for numerous made-for-PPC websites that are low in fresh content, products or services and that do not link out to other resources.
